Flake

Throw a blend that forgives valley dust.

House-blended flake in nine stock colors and a 1/4-inch cut, boxed at the Tracy bench for Ripon garages, ag shops and covered patios. Pick the blend around the dirt your floor will really see, then order every bay on one ticket.

Collage of decorative flake floor colors

Pick the blend for the dirt your floor will see.

Ripon is ringed by almond orchards, and anyone who works a garage or shop out here knows what the dry months bring. Fine dust gets into everything, and the floor wears it first. A floor that reads close to solid shows every tire track and boot print. A busy multi-color blend swallows most of it between sweeps.

So the first thing we ask about a Ripon flake job is how the floor gets used. A garage that takes a truck in off an orchard road wants a different blend than a covered patio that gets swept once a week and mostly sees bare feet. The two simply point at different boxes on the shelf.

Before you commit, take a handful of dirt from the property and hold it against the swatches. It sounds silly and it works. Every swatch on our blend page is shot from the actual blend on our shelf, so what you compare against is what ships to Ripon.

Chip size and how heavy you throw it.

The house blends come in the workhorse 1/4-inch cut, the size on nearly every garage and commercial flake floor out there. Other cuts are available on request if a job calls for a finer or bolder look, though most Ripon floors we supply stay right on the standard.

How heavy you throw matters as much as the cut. A full broadcast to refusal buries the base coat completely and leaves an even, all-chip surface. A partial broadcast leaves base color showing between the chips, uses less flake and reads lighter. We wrote up the tradeoffs in full versus partial broadcast if you want the long version.

For planning, a 25 pound box broadcasts roughly 250 to 500 square feet depending on how heavy you throw, and full refusal sits at the heavy end. Decide on the look first, then count boxes against it.

Choose how heavy you throw before you count a single box.

Ordering one batch for a shop with several bays.

Multi-bay jobs are where flake orders go wrong, and almost always by running short. This is the order we walk through with a crew before a single box gets packed.

  1. Measure every bay

Length and width of each bay, plus any office, wash area or storage room getting the same floor. Multi-bay ag shops and long garages add up faster than people expect, so measure instead of guessing off the size of the building.

  2. Use a garage as the yardstick

At full refusal, a two-car garage lands between two and four boxes depending on chip size and how heavy you throw. Scale from there, and flag any bay that gets a partial broadcast so we count it lighter.

  3. Order every box up front

Running out with wet base on the floor is the one flake problem nobody can fix later. Put every box on one ticket so the last bay gets thrown as heavy as the first.

  4. Pick up or take delivery

Most Ripon orders go out the same week, and pickup at the Tracy bench is always open. For a big shop the drive in usually beats paying freight, and we will have the boxes staged when you pull up.

  5. Keep the leftover box

If one comes back unopened, shelve it at the shop. A patch a few years from now goes better with flake from the same blend than with a guess at a color match.

Nine house colors, plus a custom mix.

The shelf carries nine stock blends: Carbon, Outback, Wombat, Coyote, Shoreline, Basalt, Nightfall, Orbit and Tidal Wave. Every one of them is blended in-house, which is how box two matches box one and how the color you picked off a swatch is the color that shows up in your truck.

If none of the nine fits, a custom blend is a phone call away. Brand colors for a showroom, or a one-off for a customer who knows exactly what they want: bring us the color and the timeline. Jobs specced Simiron end to end can run Simiron’s own decorative chip, which we bring in with the rest of that stack so the paperwork and the floor match.

If you are stuck between two blends, look at both swatches by daylight before you decide. Garage light fools people. The color under a shop light at night is rarely the color the floor shows with the door up at noon, and plenty of second thoughts start right there. Pick by daylight, because that is how a Ripon garage floor spends most of the summer.

Base coat under it, clear on top of it.

Flake does nothing on its own. It gets broadcast into our 100% solids build coat while that coat is still wet, scraped once it has cured, then locked down under the UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. That is the stack behind every flake system in our catalog.

In Ripon the clear matters more than usual, because so many garages spend the summer with the door up. The UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat holds its color in that sun. If the slab is an older outbuilding pour, test it for moisture before any of this, and if the reading is bad a moisture vapor barrier goes under the build coat.

Every flake floor starts with the concrete opened up by the right diamond grinding segments. If the room is a wash bay that stays wet most of the day, a quartz broadcast may serve it better than flake, and we will say so on the phone.

Base, flake and clear on one order means nothing shows up mismatched.

Flake questions from Ripon shops and garages.

Which flake blend hides dirt best in a Ripon garage?

A busy multi-color blend hides dust and tire marks better than one that reads close to solid. Hold some dirt from your own property against the swatches before you choose. Every swatch is shot from the actual blend on our shelf, so the comparison is a fair one.

How many boxes does a two-car garage take?

At full refusal, most two-car garages need two to four boxes, depending on the chip size and how heavy you throw. Send the dimensions and we will count it for you, with enough on hand to finish the far corner at the same weight as the first.

What size are the chips?

The house blends are cut at 1/4 inch, the standard size on most garage and commercial flake floors. Other cuts are available on request if you want a finer or bolder look, though most Ripon floors we supply stay with the standard cut.

Will the last box match the first one?

Yes. We blend flake in-house and keep batches consistent, so a multi-bay shop ordered in one go comes out looking like one floor. Ordering every box up front also keeps you from running short with wet base still sitting on the slab.

Can you blend a custom color?

Yes. Brand colors and one-off mixes are a conversation with the bench, since we blend in-house instead of ordering from a catalog. Bring us the color you have in mind and the date you need it, and we will tell you what is realistic.

What goes over the flake once it is down?

Scrape the cured broadcast, then seal it with the UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. That clear holds its color in sunlight, which matters on a Ripon garage that spends the summer with the door open. We stock the base, the flake and the clear, so the whole stack ships together.

From the Tracy bench to Ripon.

Ripon sits on Highway 99 at the Modesto end of the county, right where the Stanislaus River marks the line between San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. It is about 18 road miles from the Tracy bench, so boxes go out the same week or you can load them yourself.

Full blend detail and every swatch are on the site-wide decorative flake blend page. The rest of what we ship this way starts at the Ripon supply page, the county view is under San Joaquin County, and bay sizes or blend questions go through the contact page.
